Karagar se Karigar is a transformative initiative by the Assam Skill Development Mission (ASDM) aimed at rehabilitating jail inmates through structured skill development and vocational training. The programme seeks to convert correctional institutions (Karagar) into centres of learning, empowering inmates to become skilled workers (Karigar) capable of earning sustainable livelihoods after release.
Under this initiative, inmates are provided hands-on training in market-relevant trades such as handicrafts, handloom, pottery, bamboo and cane crafts, tailoring, carpentry, food processing, and other employable skills aligned with industry demand. Certified trainers and master craftsmen (Gurus) conduct the training, ensuring quality skill transfer and adherence to national occupational standards wherever applicable.
The initiative focuses on rehabilitation, self-reliance, and social reintegration, enabling inmates to gain confidence, dignity of labour, and economic independence. By equipping inmates with practical skills and certification, Karagar se Karigar contributes to reducing recidivism, promoting inclusive growth, and strengthening Assam’s skilled workforce.
